Not only does this trek lead us to Everest itself, it takes us through some of the most beautiful alpine scenery on earth - Khumbu, the home of the charming Sherpa people.
Flying in past the mountains to Lukla, we head for Namche Bazaar and Khumjung where we acclimatise well, with a side trip to Thame. Like all the great expeditions, past and present, we visit the great Thyangboche monastery, before another well planned acclimatisation day at the last village of Dingboche, where there are options to Chukhung or cliffhanging Nangkartshang gompa.
Gradually ascending alongside the glacier we wind our way up to the famous panoramic view from Kalapattar: the awesome south-west face of Everest, the vast black triangle, and now below us our final destination, the famous Base Camp at the foot of the Khumbu icefall. We have an additional, slightly more strenuous, option to the even better viewpoint right into the Western Cwm, the whole '53 route visible, from the Pumori ridge - unique to Terra Firma. |
