This is the off-road biking route par excellence. With fantastic views of the peaks from the moment we arrive in Pokhara, we start with a warm up on the Sarangkot hill circuit with the Annapurna range dominating to the north. Bikes in good order, we set off to traverse back to Kathmandu, in the fabulous foothills north of the road, only joining the highway for a few kilometres along the whole route. We cross fantastic viewpoints, forgotten jeep tracks winding uphill, thrilling single-tracks down, connecting the great river valleys of Nepal such as the mighty Marsyangdi. This route was part of the main east-west trail before the road was built. Now almost forgotten except by local foot traffic, it makes for exciting biking, including some challenging climbs - but what would you expect from this Himalayan mountain biking paradise. Our back-up team has to cut back from the highway to meet us and set up each night's camp; these single tracks are inaccessible to vehicles. When we reach the ancient hill town of Gorkha the views really open out, the great Himalaya at its most magnificent.
By popular demand now a christmas departure: options on new year extension including 3 days rafting. |
