• over the great wild plateau of Tibet to Everest and the high passes of the Himalaya to the foothills of Nepal.

| Flying in from Kathmandu we have 4 essential nights in Lhasa to acclimatise and see the city. Then we set off on this amazing journey. Biking is excellent on the unsurfaced roads that wind across the high plateau. Gradients are low enough, switching-back to the six great passes on this 600 mile tour. Gyantse is our first destination, via pass views over the scintillating Yamdrok lake. Then Shigatse and the famous Tashilunpo gompa. After the big 5,220 metre Lhakpa La, we leave the 'friendship highway' at Shegar for the track to Rongbuk at the foot of Everest. This is an incredible approach over the Pang La under the massive north face. We have an option of a day trek on the lower slopes of Everest itself! Returning to the highway we climb gradually to the Thang La. After our last fantastic view out over the great Tibetan plateau we have just traversed, its now freewheel all the way, a 4,600 metre descent, via the border to the Sun Kosi valley and the lush Kathmandu valley beyond. One of the best bike trips in the world. |
