| No trip on earth could be more awe-inspiring.
Not only do we see the cultural heart of Tibet, Lhasa, the forbidden city, and the monasteries of central Tibet, but we drive right up to the base of the big three mother mountains of the central Himalayan spine - Everest, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma, all awesome 8000 metre peaks and revered by Tibetan Buddhists. From Kathmandu we fly in over Everest to Lhasa, and spend 3 nights here in our comfortable hotel, acclimatizing and visiting the sacred Jokhang, Drepung and Sera monasteries and the incredible towering palace of the Potala. Starting our tour past the blue waters of Yamdrok lake, we visit the Kumbum Stupa at Gyantse and the great Tashilunpo monastery at Shigatse. Across the great plateau, encountering nomad yak herders, with views of Makalu and Lhotse we reach the famous Rongbuk monastery under the great north face of Everest. Rising early to catch the dramatic sunrise on the snow flanks of the highest mountain in the world, we have a whole day to visit the famous base camp itself. Following the Rongshang valley we cross to Cho Oyu base, our next camp, and another fabulous sunset and rise. Shishapangma base completes this amazing trilogy. Over the last of our high passes, with a final view of Everest, we reach the Nepal border and the lush green descent to Kathmandu. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
