The volcanoes have created a phenomenal landscape, a climber’s paradise. Summiting here is a unique experience, rising high above the plateau between the twin spines of the Andes where the snow-capped volcanoes punctuate the skyline. To be able to climb such incredible peaks by day, and relax in the evening at hospitable country hostals, as the sun sets on tomorrow’s summit - no wonder this is our client’s favourite trekking peak trip. The Ecuador experience is fantastic: vibrant Quechua markets, trekking in through the unique Andean ‘paramo’, nights at awesome high-altitude refuges, and then the big summits themselves. From the fascinating old hispanic city of Quito, we start with essential acclimatization trekking in Cotacachi-Cayapas ecological reserve and the ascent of Imbabura getting us gradually higher over 4000m. Our master-stroke is a day on the Espinosa glacier, close to 5000m, absolutely maximizing our acclimatization and success rates on the big three.
These are all climbed from their excellent refuges, already high on the slopes, with alpine starts to reach their incredible summits soon after dawn. Each refuge night is a little higher, each peak more challenging. But the rewards are amazing - this is Andean climbing at its very best, staggering views, dramatic crater-rims, sinuous glaciers - these peaks are works of art!!! We have plenty of relaxing rest and contingency days between peaks, and finish at the sub-tropical spa town of Baños for a big celebration before returning to Quito. They really don’t come better than this. |
