The Inca Trail treads the very stones laid by the Incas themselves, winding through the dramatic Andes foothills to the site of the great sacred lost city of Machu Picchu. All along the trail there are other remarkable sites, evidence of the incredible development of this ancient civilization. Flying into Cusco from Lima across the main spine of the Andes, we acclimatize in this fascinating city to the initial change in altitude before starting our trek. A short drive to the sacred valley and we are trekking the ancient trail, rising gradually to gain stunning views of the snow-capped Cordillera Vilcabamba range. We pass many Inca sites before reaching Inti Punku, the sacred sun gate.
This brings us to Machu Picchu itself, arriving early on the last day. We have the whole day exploring the unbelievable ruins of the ancient city. Abandoned for mysterious reasons in the 15th century, it was long sought by the Spanish conquistadores, with rumours of vast mountains of gold hidden here. They never found the city, or the gold. In the evening we take the spectacular train ride back for a rest day in Cusco. This trek is justifiably one of the most
