This route is pure magic from the start,
nothing can beat the French high Pyrenees
for absolutely stunning scenery.
Flying into Toulouse we drive straight into the hills to the start of the trek from our first night near Argeles. This trek uses a combination of nights at excellent high mountain refuges and camping, where we can get vehicle access to replenish supplies.
This allows us to follow the best possible route deep into the interior of this fantastic landscape. We start with the traverse of Cabaliros, set back from the main ridge of peaks, giving us fabulous views of the whole range. Not all the walk is on the GR10 proper, its not always the most rewarding option. The high route on the Marcadau to the Lac d'Arratille allows us to take the most spectacular route of all, over the Spanish passes and back to the Oulettes de Gaube. These high level nights in refuges give us access to the best section of the GR10, passing below the glaciers of Vignemale to cut through to the fabulous Cirque de Gavarnie. The last two days are within this stunning mountain arena, climbing toward the breathtaking Breche de Roland pass, and scrambling (in places) across to our last refuge at the foot of Pic Pimene. The ascent of this 2800 metre peak is the perfect end to a rugged but very rewarding route.
Some of the trek climbs could be treated as optional, but this is still a challenging route. You'll need some real hill-walking experience to enjoy it to the full. |
