• India's most beautiful mountains: idyllic foothills, fabulous viewpoints, fascinating villages.
|
| |
| The Nanda Devi range, grouped around the second highest mountain in India, not only contains its most stunning peaks but is surrounded by its most gorgeous foothills. This trek passes through what is regarded as India's finest mountain landscape: villages with ornate shrines to the mountain deities, thick forested slopes leading to open ridge crests with awesome views. Part of this trek is known as the Curzon trail and gives us vistas up the now inaccessible Rishi gorge to the summit of Nanda Devi itself, the route taken by Shipton and Tilman on the first ascent in 1936. We gradually ascend from unspoilt villages to the south of the massif through beautiful forests to the high pasture of Bedni Bugyal for its incredible views of the range, particularly Trisul immediately to the north. From here we link a succession of ever-varying landscapes to the last highlight, the 3660 metre Kauri Pass, a panorama of all the peaks ahead along the Tibetan border. Our drive out through spectacular scenery links with an overnight train back to Delhi. This is an absolutely wonderful trek on which we will still see very few westerners - the best parts of the Indian Himalaya seem to be something of a secret. |
