• both the most exciting Inca Trails in Peru: Macha Picchu (everything as on the Inca Trail trek) & the 5 day trek to the rarely seen mysteries of long lost Choquequirao • the last civilizations of the Incas as they retreated deep into the Andes, a chance to explore sites still being discovered!

Macha Picchu is truly magnificent, but rarely visited Choquequirao has so many of the same unique Inca features, and remains far more unspoilt and mysterious. The only way to really compare them is to see them both, and this trek is perfect for that. There are many similarities which historians are still trying to make sense of; both were never discovered by the Spanish, and are believed to be two of the final strongholds of the last Incas as they retreated deep into the forests of the Andes.
We start with the Machu Picchu Inca Trail, visiting its many Inca sites on the 4 day trek to Inti Punku, the sacred sun gate. We have a whole day to explore the fabulous ruined city of Macha Picchu itself, before the spectacular train ride back to Cusco.
After a rest day we cross the sacred Apurimac river for the 5 day round trip to Choquequirao. This site is far more ‘hidden’ than Macha Picchu, and our trek in is a real adventure, descending the deep gorge of the river and climbing almost 2000 metres on the other side to the amazing ridge site of the ruins. We are rewarded with two nights here, time to explore the many parts of the site. And we mean explore. Much of this site has not yet been fully recorded by the archaeologists; there are whole sections still only partially uncovered in the surrounding jungle. It is indescribable how exciting it is to be among the very few who get to see them. |
