Without doubt the most rewarding climbing trip in the Himalaya: to climb both these uniquely different peaks, neither of them too technical, and experience the remote high-altitude Hongu valley as well.
Our approach route to Mera is the only one to give really sound acclimatization, and it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding of all approaches in Nepal: the Pangkongma La into the beautiful unspoilt forests of the Hinku valley and the amazing Surkie ridge path, suspended between fantastic views.
Our acclimatization programme for the final stages is simply unrivalled, perfected over years of experience, making sure everyone is on top form for the final push. From base, we combine acclimatization ascents with winter skills and glacier training sessions. Then we set up high camp, an incredible location for a sunset on the massive Himalaya. We summit early next day. The view from the top is one of nature's most immaculate designs - Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kangchenjunga, Ama Dablam; the epi-centre of the Himalaya.
Then we head for the challenging Amphu Labtsa pass through the wild uninhabited Hongu valley, its glacial lakes at the hidden crossroads of the high Himalaya - the great traverse between Everest and Makalu.
This brings us to Island peak, the classic Khumbu climb: a steep ramp onto a winding ice ridge hanging in free space, vast glaciers in deep valleys on all sides, the summit dominated by the colossal sheer face of Lhotse. Mountaineers dreams are made of this. Our return through Khumbu even includes both Thyangboche monastery and Namche Bazaar. |
